Hello, and thank you for visiting Pathway-To-Tech, a platform dedicated to helping individuals—especially those who’ve faced challenges like incarceration or systemic obstacles—find direction, build digital skills, and pursue a brighter future. My name is Teal Bailey, and this website is not just a project; it’s a deeply personal mission born from my own life experiences. I hope my story inspires you and connects with anyone searching for hope, purpose, and a chance to start over. I attempted to break it down and summarize this to the best of my ability without sacrificing any key points.
I’m 32 years old, a proud Native American from Kansas City, and a father to two amazing kids—my 11-year-old daughter, Shyla, and my 10-year-old son, Axl. Life hasn’t always been easy. My childhood was marked by instability, loss, and hardship. My father, though hardworking and loving, struggled to raise my sister and me in the absence of resources often denied to men during that era. My mother battled alcoholism, and her struggles led to her passing when I was just 9 years old. Losing her was a turning point, even if I didn’t fully realize it then.
To cope, I hid my pain, pretending her death didn’t affect me. This defense mechanism helped me survive emotionally as a child but deeply influenced my mental health and decision-making later in life. I carried that pain with me, and as I grew older, I made choices that reflected my inner turmoil.
Despite the chaos, I discovered a passion for technology at a young age. I was fascinated by how things worked—taking apart and reassembling radios, VCRs, and game consoles. My love for technology became my escape, a place where my curiosity and creativity thrived. Gaming and computers became obsessions, but they also contributed to my isolation. My grades declined, my social life deteriorated, and I started down a path that led to trouble.
By my teens, I was skipping school, committing crimes, and living recklessly. I didn’t see a future for myself, and my life spiraled into brushes with the law, time in jail, and homelessness. At one point, I was a 17-year-old with nowhere to go, sleeping in parks and stairwells, feeling invisible to the world.
It wasn’t until I spent two years in jail that I finally confronted the pain of my past, especially the grief over my mother. I realized how much I missed her and how that unresolved pain shaped the decisions that brought me to where I was. That period of reflection marked the beginning of my transformation.
When I was released, I earned my GED and discovered I was smarter than I gave myself credit for. Despite setbacks, I pursued work, found moments of stability, and even enrolled in college to study information technology. However, old patterns resurfaced, and I faced more struggles—including divorce, homelessness, and multiple stints in jail.
Through it all, my fascination with technology remained constant. No matter how unstable my life became, I always found peace and purpose when working on computers, fixing phones, or diving into new software. That passion became my anchor—a reminder that I was capable of more.
After years of struggling, I decided it was time to break the cycle for good. I recognized that many people who face the challenges I’ve experienced—poverty, incarceration, addiction—are often intelligent and resourceful but lack the guidance, confidence, or opportunities to channel their potential.
Pathway-To-Tech is more than just a website; it’s a community for people like me—individuals who’ve faced adversity but are ready to turn their lives around. My goal is to help others discover pathways into technology, an industry full of opportunities for those willing to learn.
This platform is dedicated to:
I believe in the untapped potential of those who’ve been marginalized or written off by society. People with a past don’t have to be defined by it. With the right guidance and support, anyone can succeed in the tech world—or any field they’re passionate about.
If my story resonates with you, I invite you to explore the resources on this site, reach out via the contact section, and join me on this journey. Together, we can break the cycle, support one another, and create opportunities for ourselves and our communities.
Thank you for being here. Let’s make this the beginning of a new chapter—not just for me, but for all of us.
Warm regards,
Teal Bailey
